The Gallatin National Forest lies along the northwestern corridor into Yellowstone National Park and is cut by numerous creeks that drain into the Gallatin River, a blue ribbon trout stream, were fly fishing is at its best. All camps provide pit toilets with handicapped accessibility, large tables, firerings with firewood available for purchase, garbage service and drinking water from hand pumps or pressurized systems. No hookups are available except for Red Cliff Campground which provides electricity to 26 of it sites.
Greek
Creek Campground, Swan Creek Campground, Moose Flat Campground and Red Cliff
Campground lie about 30 to 45 miles south of Bozeman, Montana in the rugged
confines of the Gallatin Canyon. While Bozeman offers many attractions,
including historic sites, the Museum of the Rockies with its dinosaur
exhibits and paleontology lab, hot springs and great shopping, it still
cannot match the attraction of the pine-scented air, crystal waters and
great scenery of the Gallatin National Forest. Hike trails meandering along
the impressive Gallatin River or climb to mountain-bound Lava Lake. Mountain
bike trails lead upward into glacier-carved cul-de-sacs or climb over lofty
ridges to drop into adjacent drainages. Nearby businesses along Highway 191
and at Big Sky, MT, provide gourmet dining, white water rafting, mountain
bike rentals, horseback rides and cookouts, and quality gifts and
convenience items. Only 45 minutes from Yellowstone National Park, Red Cliff
Campground allows tent and other "soft-sided" camping making it a good
starting point to tour the park without the usual "hard-sided" camping
restrictions. Red Cliff Campground also has electricity in 26 of its
sites. Red Cliff and Greek Creek Campground have pressurized water
systems but the nearest dump stations are in West Yellowstone or Bozeman.

Hyalite Canyon Recreation Area is the
most heavily visited recreation area in Montana with three campgrounds and
two day use areas. Langohr Campground along Hyalite Creek provides wildlife
viewing and fishing midst towering rocky peaks. Hood Creek Campground and
Chisholm Campground abut Hyalite Reservoir and are starting points for numerous
short and long hiking routes into the dense timber up to alpine meadows and
lakes on the
peaks above. History Rock is a short hike, while mountain bikers thrill with the
fast descents along abandoned logging roads into Sourdough Canyon or back down
the paved access road. The reservoir's "no-wake" rule make it a canoeing and
fishing pleasure. Located 15 miles south of Bozeman off of South 19th Avenue,
this area should not be missed.

Bozeman Ranger District.

These National Forest Campgrounds in the Bighorn National Forest are Forest Service owned, but concessionaire operated. These campgrounds do honor the half-price discount for Golden Age and Golden Access Passes which are the discount cards issued by the Forest Service for senior citizens and disabled citizens for use in National Forest campgrounds. They can be acquired from any Forest Service office for $10. Gallatin Canyon Campgrounds does not honor discount cards issued by other governmental agencies, such as the Golden Eagle Passport issued by the National Parks and Forest Service for discounts to entrance fees in National Parks and refuges or historic areas. State Park passes issued by the governing state for use in State Parks only are not valid in Forest Service campgrounds.
Reservations can be made
for these
campgrounds and require an additional fee. Call the National Recreation
Reservation Service at 1-877-444-6777 or visit them at
Recreation.gov. The first car is included in the
basic fee, a second car requires an additional fee of $8 to be collected at the
campground. Only two vehicles are allowed per campsite, but a vehicle plus
whatever it is towing is considered one vehicle. Reservations may be made up to
180 days in advance, or 360 days for group areas, and
need to be made at least 3-5 days prior to arrival date.
Only a portion of all sites in any campground are held for
reservations so all camps allow first- come, first-serve camping daily. Reservations are clearly marked on the sites several days in
advance of the reservation; camping is permitted in those sites until the day
of the reservation which is posted on the the reservation sign. Check-out time is
generally 2 p.m. and people with reservations are asked to arrive by 6
p.m. Special instructions concerning your reservations or arrival can be given
to camp personnel by calling 1-406-587-9054. Due to lack of technology (no
phones) in many of the campgrounds, please allow 48 hours for cancellations or
changes to be implemented.
