The campgrounds near Red Lodge, Montana are situated on the edge of the rugged Absaroka - (pronounced Ab-sor'-kee) Beartooth Wilderness Area which contains the highest point in Montana and an extensive alpine plateau of 10,000 feet elevation. The town of Red Lodge provides quaint shops, full services and excellent dining choices. Make sure you observe the community courtesy of allowing cross walkers, including jay walkers, the right of way in this laid-back mountain locality. All camps provide pit toilets, garbage service, large tables, firerings with firewood available for purchase, and drinking water from hand pumps. No hookups are available.
Creek-side campgrounds abound with natural beauty, great fishing,
birds and wildlife in these camps 12 miles south of Red
Lodge on the Beartooth
Highway. At the base of impressive 10,000 foot Twin Peaks, Parkside
Campground, Greenough Lake Campground, and Limber Pine Campground provide the
perfect jumping off point for a trip over the Beartooth Scenic Byway into
Yellowstone National Park. Pine filled sites along the rollicking waters
of Rock Creek provide ample reason to stay awhile, too. Rocky 4WD trails
onto the Beartooth Plateau with its spectacular vistas of alpine lakes, forest
meadows overlooking the beginning of the Great Plains, beckon the brave of
heart. For quieter and more remote camping, Sheridan Campground, and Rattin Campground nestled among giant spruce and Douglas fir invite
introspection with nature. Moose are a frequent visitor here and should be
treated with respect if they happen to stop at your site for a bite of willow.
Parkside Campground offers group sites while all the campgrounds offer large
tables and open areas for tenting. No hookups are available.
Seven miles west of Red Lodge on the West Fork of Rock Creek, Basin Campground and Cascade Campground provide uncrowded and scenic camping near numerous hiking trails along waterfalls and tumbling creeks that lead into the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness. Nearby Wild Bill Lake is stocked for quality fishing with the cold clear waters of Rock Creek perfect for supplying great tasting trout. Moose, deer, elk and numerous other forest animals are found close by for unique photo opportunities.
